The Advancement of NFS Benchmarking: SFS 2.0
David Robinson, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Abstract
With the release of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation's
(SPEC) System File Server (SFS) Release 1.0 benchmark suite in April
1993, the characterization of NFS server performance grew from a small
and not widely accepted set of benchmarks, to a single industry
standard benchmark. This paper will provide a historical look at the
success of SFS 1.0 [Note 1] and how it has driven
server capabilities, describe SFS 1.0's shortcomings, and detail the
design and rationale behind the development of SFS 2.0.
