Overview
The 3rd USENIX Conference on File and Storage Technologies (FAST '04)
brings together storage system researchers and practitioners to explore
new directions in the design, implementation, evaluation, and deployment
of storage systems. The conference will consist of two and a half days
of technical presentations, including refereed papers,
work-in-progress reports, and poster sessions.
Topics
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Caching, replication, consistency, and mobility in storage systems
- Data and metadata layout and organization, indexing
- Empirical studies
- I/O in parallel and distributed systems
- Novel storage architectures and technologies
- Storage for databases
- Storage networking, wide area storage, GRID storage, peer-to-peer systems
- Storage system reliability, availability, scalability, and disaster tolerance
- Storage system security, management, and performance evaluation
Paper Submissions
Submissions will be done electronically via this Web form.
The Web form asks for contact information for the paper and allows for the submission
of your full paper file in PDF format.
Submissions
must be of full papers (no extended abstracts) and must be
no longer than fourteen (14) pages, including all notes, references,
title page, appendices, and figures when typeset in two-column format in 10
point type on 12 point (single-spaced) leading, with the text block
being no more than 6.5" wide by 9" deep.
Authors must not be identified in the submissions, either
explicitly or by implication (e.g., through the references or
acknowledgments).
Blind reviewing of full papers will be done by the program committee,
assisted by outside referees. All accepted papers will be shepherded
through an editorial review process by a member of the program
committee.
The FAST conference does not allow submissions that are substantially
similar to works that are previously published or
are under review for publication elsewhere. Accepted
material may not be subsequently published in other
conferences or journals for one year from the date of
acceptance by USENIX. Papers accompanied by nondisclosure
agreement forms will not be read or
reviewed. All submissions will be held in confidence
prior to publication of the technical program, both as a
matter of policy and in accordance with the U.S. Copyright
Act of 1976.
Submissions violating these rules or the formatting
guidelines will not be considered for publication.
One author per paper may take a registration discount of $200. If the registration fee poses a hardship to the presenter, USENIX can offer a complimentary registration.
Best Paper Awards
Awards will be given for the best paper and best student paper at the
conference.
Work-in-Progress Reports and Poster Sessions
Would you like to share a provocative opinion, interesting preliminary work, or
a cool idea that will provoke discussion? The FAST technical sessions will
include slots for work-in-progress reports, "outrageous" opinion statements, and poster sessions.
We are particularly interested in presentations of student work. To submit,
please send a proposal (one page or less) to fast04wips@usenix.org by March 19, 2004. Please indicate if you wish your proposal to be considered for a WiP report, a poster session, or both.
Birds-of-a-Feather
Sessions
Birds-of-a-Feather sessions (BoFs) are informal gatherings organized by
attendees interested in a particular topic. BoFs will be held in the evening.
BoFs may be scheduled in advance by emailing the Conference Office at
bofs@usenix.org. BoFs may also be scheduled at the conference.

on the conference Web site. The information will be in both HTML and a printable
