John P. Crane, Qualcomm

Abstract:

My current role at Qualcomm is Postmaster and Manager of the UNIX Systems Administration Development Team. My group is charged with designing and implementing the distributed infrastruture and related facilities used by our numerous workstations and servers. Our current projects are focused on integrating into our primarily UNIX environment various NT solutions, such as mail routers and repositories, shared file service, single login capabilities, web authentication and cross platform printing. Additionally we're looking at applying some of our core UNIX keystone areas, such as AFS and Kerberos into the growing NT environment at Qualcomm. One of the major obstacles we're facing include namespace segregation by platform rather than department and the trust issues that derive from that schizm. I'm keenly interested in the approaches others are taking towards providing authenticated access to all networked resources in in a a platform independant fashion.
