We use Windows NT as our primary platform for "notification servers." A notification server is used as infrastructure for same-time collaboration. It holds a modest amount of shared state on behalf of clients and notifies those clients when the shared state changes. We are particularly interested in the performance characteristics of NT for heavy traffic of small packets on many TCP connections, and in ways to tune NT for those workloads.
