Neil Gunther, Performance Dynamics Company

Abstract:

Currently, I have very little experience with NT. Some of my clients have products that run on NT. I am interested in all aspects of computer performance and want to learn more about performance tools and capacity planning opportunities in NT.

I have written a book entitled: "THE PRACTICAL PERFORMANCE ANALYST," which is due out in September. https://members.aol.com/CoDynamo/Home.htm Some of the examples in that book assume a UNIX context (e.g. improving application performance via `symmetrizing' the kernel). I would like to understand more about what NT has to offer in that area and others.

I hold undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Physics, an M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Australia, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Southampton, England.

I spent eight years as a researcher at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center where I developed the "PARCbench" multiprocessor benchmark (an early SPEC MP benchmark contender), and also developed the Path-integral Method (borrowed from quantum mechanics) for analyzing large transients in virtual-memory computer systems and multi-acces packet networks. Other work at PARC included VLSI design and test for the `Dragon' multiprocessor workstation (reincarnated as the SPARCcenter multiprocessor servers from Sun Microsystems).

In 1990 I joined Pyramid Technology (now a subsidiary of Siemens Nixdorf). There, I held positions as Senior Scientist and Manager of the Performance Analysis Group. In that capacity I helped Pyramid attain industry high TP1 and TPC benchmarks on its Unix multiprocessor products. I also did performance simulation studies for the design of the RM1000 massively parallel database server.

In 1994 I founded Performance Dynamics Company? whose clients have included:

Amdahl Corporation, Tandem Computers, Gartner Group and the Transaction Processing Performance Council. Performance Dynamics also offers training courses and workshops in distributed systems performance management and capacity planning. I have lectured worldwide and written more than 50 articles on a variety of topics in computer performance analysis. Most recently I was awarded Best Technical Paper at CMG'96. I am a member of the ACM and the IEEE.
