Abstract:

Windows NT server is the primary research platform for our "Notification Server," a synchronous groupware server based on the NSTP protocol (see https://nstp.research.lotus.com/211a.htm ) publications. As such, it is very important that we understand the performance characteristics and future directions of the NT platform. The NSTP protocol supports synchronous communication between multiple clients through a centralized server; applications include awareness, chat and multi-user games. The protocol includes a notion of Places, which are containers for Things (shared state). Users interact by entering into the same Place, and manipulating Things, or sending instant messages (Notices).
