Statement Regarding Recent USENIX Security Peer-Review Allegations

Recently, several prominent members of the computer security and privacy research community received emails alleging that a group of reviewers sought to gain an unfair advantage in the peer-review process via omitted conflicts or collusion. These emails include supposed confidential reviewer assignments for conferences including USENIX Security 2022-2024. This information was shared with recipients who were not on the USENIX Security program committees and who could have been conflicted with the papers involved.

Statement on Deliberate Scope Adjustment from the NSDI Steering Committee

The mission statement of the USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation (NSDI), expressed in the Call for Papers, is that "NSDI focuses on the design principles, implementation, and practical evaluation of networked and distributed systems." The NSDI Steering Committee is dedicated to ensuring that the symposium aligns with this goal on an annual basis and to providing strategic support for each set of NSDI program co-chairs in creating symposia that represent the breadth of the community as described in and united by that focus.

Today USENIX announced the winners of the 2023 Internet Defense Prize competition. Created in 2014, the award is funded by Meta and offered in partnership with USENIX to celebrate contributions to the protection and defense of the internet.

Update on the Enigma Conference from the Enigma Steering Committee

Today, we’re suspending the USENIX Enigma conference. Though we hope it will come back, we have no immediate plans for its return.

Membership

The trend of USENIX memberships over the past five years has been on an overall slow, steady decline. This hasn't necessarily correlated with attendance at our conferences, especially prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, many of the people who are part of our conference-going community are not choosing to become members of the association.
