Birds-of-a-Feather Sessions

Lead or attend a BoF! Meet with your peers! Present new work! Don't miss these special activities designed to maximize the value of your time at the conference. The always popular evening Birds-of-a-Feather sessions are very informal gatherings of persons interested in a particular topic.

Vendor BoFs
Want to demonstrate a new product or discuss your company's latest technologies with FedWeek attendees? Host a Vendor BoF! These sponsored one-hour sessions give companies a chance to talk about products and proprietary technology—and they include promotional benefits.  Scaling Software Engineering Education to 50,000 Students With MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses)

BoF Descriptions

VMware Vendor BoF: Cloud Resource Management: Past, Present and Future
Ajay Gulati, John Arrasjid, VMware
Wednesday, June 13, 8:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m., Back Bay AB

Join VMware as we discuss existing cloud resource management. We will cover solutions like DRS, Storage-DRS, and then explore some future challenges such as: scalable resource management, dealing with aggregate/imprecise information, performance troubleshooting, etc.

We will also discuss the VMware vCloud Architecture Toolkit ("vCAT"). To date VMware customers and vCloud Powered Service Providers around the globe have used vCAT to guide their vCloud deployments and offer technical validation, saving them both time and money. vCAT has also been essential for VMware VSPP partners, serving as the foundation for the design and architecture of VSPP Cloud environments, and offering technical validation for Service Providers.

Scaling Software Engineering Education to 50,000 Students With MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses)
Armando Fox, UC Berkeley
Thursday, June 14, 8:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., Back Bay AB

By repurposing Rails' first-rate tools for testing and code quality, we adapted our on-campus "Software Engineering" course at Berkeley to an online format. Over 50,000 enrolled, and ultimately 3,500 completed the majority of the same assignments used by Berkeley students. Topics covered in the on-campus course include test-driven development, user-centric behavior-driven design, legacy code, design patterns, and performance and security basics for SaaS.

Besides enabling online use, the nontrivial autograders we created have improved the on-campus course as well, and made it feasible to transfer this technology to other classrooms.

Come to the BOF to discuss online education or if you're possibly interested in adapting this technology to your own classroom as early as Fall 2012.
