N2Women Luncheon

Symposium Luncheon and Test of Time Award Presentation

The 2023 NSDI Test of Time award will be presented during the luncheon. The USENIX Test of Time Awards recognize papers that have had a lasting impact on their fields. To qualify, a paper must have been presented at its respective conference at least 10 years ago.

Reducing mankind's carbon footprint is one of the big challenges of our age. Networks play a key role in this challenge, enabling applications that facilitate greater sustainability while at the same time contributing to carbon footprint themselves. While advances in hardware technology lead to continuous power efficiency gains, those improvements may not be sufficient and other ways in which networks can become "greener" should be explored. This talk provides an overview of challenges and opportunities in that regard. Possibilities span from instrumenting networks with metrics that provide meaningful visibility into carbon-related matters to pollution-aware network optimization frameworks and the need for associated control protocol extensions. Rather than present a set of ready solution proposals, emphasis is given to point out areas in which further work is needed.
Dr. Alexander Clemm is a Distinguished Engineer at Futurewei in Santa Clara, California. He has been involved in networking software and management technology throughout his career, most recently in the areas of green networking, high-precision networks and future networking services, as well as network analytics, intent-based networking, service assurance, and telemetry. Alex is the recipient of the 2020 Salah Aidarous Award given by IEEE CNOM and IFIP TC6.6 to "an individual who has provided unremitting service and dedication to the IT and Telecommunications Network Operations and Management community". Alex has an extensive publication record and holds an M.S. degree in computer science from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from the University of Munich, Germany.

Birds-of-a-Feather Sessions (BoFs)
Registered attendees may schedule Birds-of-a-Feather sessions (BoFs) and reserve meeting rooms for them via the USENIX Slack space. The attendee guide, which will be sent to registered attendees shortly before the event, contains more details for joining the Slack space and scheduling a BoF. Each room will be set with a projector and screen, in one-hour increments. We will have the following rooms available at the following times:
