Automating Network Configuration & Management

What's the state of the art for automated network configuration and management? What systems and tools are available, either freely or commercially? Where are these issues being considered and discussed?

Over the last 15 years or so, much of the research in the system administration field has focused on automation. It's now well accepted that a well-run operation doesn't manage 10,000 servers individually, but rather uses tools like cfengine to manage definitions of those servers and then create instances of those servers as needed. In the networking world, though, most of us seem to be still manually configuring (and reconfiguring) every device.

After a full day of serious technical lectures, join a professional comedian/UNIX admin/rabbi in what promises to be a fun-filled, hour-long discussion, and the best part is that there is no 2-drink minimum! Rabbs appeared in the highlight of the 2003 premiere of "Banzai" on Fox TV and has performed at the hottest comedy clubs in Hollywood. He is a cast member of the "Ding Dong Show," a popular show whose performances at the World Famous Comedy Store are filmed for an upcoming movie. The unixrabbi's adult humor joke book is unique in that it makes fun of the world of IT through the eyes of a UNIX admin.

SAGE needs to have an elected Board as part of its transition to an independent organization. The SAGE Interim board has formed a Leadership Committee, chaired by Greg Rose, along with Esther Filderman, Adam Moskowitz, and Mario Obejas. The first job of this committee is to coordinate the first election. In this BoF, you can hear more about what is needed to be on the SAGE Board of Directors, discuss any issues with the election process, and maybe even get involved! This is not intended to be an update about SAGE itself; please come to the SAGE Community Meeting earlier in the evening.
